HFHSL was founded in 1986. At that time, a small volunteer staff supported the entire program, from initial homebuyer applications and mortgage processing to seeking funding. In 1988, the first two homes were proudly completed.
Today, with a dedicated full-time staff of 29 paid employees and two ReStore facilities that employ an additional 20 people, we are proud to boast that we remain organizationally efficient as 85 cents of every dollar we raise goes directly into program expenses.
Each year, more than 3,500 volunteers give their time on the build site or ReStore, filling more than 11,000 volunteer opportunities, not counting the priceless work that is done by our many volunteer committees. Due to the hard work of these volunteers and the support of the St. Louis community, more than 350 St. Louis families now have a safe and affordable place to call home.
