As our mission indicates, Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis builds simple, decent, and affordable housing in the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County. In order to fulfill this goal, Habitat can and will build homes in any city, village, or community that is willing to work with us to improve both individual lives, as well as entire neighborhoods.
In planning a development, our organization strives to find a location that will accommodate multiple Habitat homes in a relatively small area. As an example, given the choice, we would prefer to build 25 to 30 homes on two contiguous city blocks, rather than spread 25 to 30 homes over 5 or 10 blocks. This preference is based on several factors. First, keeping our build area as small as possible significantly reduces our construction costs and labor. Second, we like to have our homeowners as close to one another as possible, so they can see other Habitat homeowners around them, and take comfort and strength from the presence of other homeowners like themselves in close proximity. Finally, we find that building in a concentrated area allows our development, or redevelopment, efforts to have a positive influence and significant impact on a small area, rather than dilute our efforts over a larger space.
Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis continuously looks for new neighborhoods both in the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County for future developments, keeping an emphasis on underserved communities, which is consistent with our mission to rebuild neighborhoods.
