Chapter 19: Electrical
1. Introduction
On most Habitat projects the Electrical work is done entirely by a subcontractor. (Where feasible, a separate electrical crew of Habitat volunteers led by a licensed electrician will be performing the electrical work). The electrician can start to do the rough-in layout after the rough framing is complete, and the building is weather-tight (roofing, windows, doors) and inspected (before insulation). After the interior and exterior are finished then the electrician will return to do the “finish electrical.” The site supervisor will schedule the electrical work, so it is a good idea to inform them when the house is ready for these phases.
2. Prior tasks to have been completed before starting
- Rough framing completed and inspected – including drywall nailers and blocking.
- Install mounting blocking for fan boxes in bedrooms and living room.
3. Prior tasks to have been completed before “plumbing finish
- Walls totally painted, cabinets installed, interior basically finished
- Exterior siding complete. This includes “J-boxes” and vinyl light blocks where there will be an outlet or exterior light. See building elevations and site supervisor for installation locations and instructions.
- Work areas clear of tools and debris so that the subcontractor can do installation easily. This includes the basement.
3. Recommended Staff/Crew Assignments
A separate electrical crew of Habitat volunteers led by a licensed electrician will be performing electrical work. This crew typically consists of 2-3 volunteers and the licensed electrician.
