Chapter 18: HVAC (Heating/Ventilation/Air Cond.)

1. Introduction

On most Habitat projects the HVAC work is done entirely by a subcontractor. He can start to do the return grill placement/floor register layout after the rough framing is complete and inspected. He will also install the bathroom vent fan. After the walls are painted then the HVAC subcontractor will return to finish the HVAC installation. The site supervisor will schedule the subcontractors, so it is a good idea to inform them when the house is ready for this phase.

2. Prior tasks to have been completed before starting “HVAC”

  • Rough framing completed and inspected – including drywall nailers and blocking.
  • Layout of the wall studs in the hallway walls must line up with the floor joists underneath.

3. Prior tasks to have been completed before “plumbing finish”

  • Walls totally painted
  • Pad constructed for the air conditioner condenser unit to sit on outside
  • Work areas clear of tools and debris so that the subcontractor can do installation easily. This includes the basement.

4. Recommended Staff/Crew Assignments

Since the bulk of the HVAC work is done by outside contractors, the only necessary task requiring volunteer assistance is cutting out the cold air return and supply run locations in the subfloor and baseplate framing.

The HVAC subcontractor will mark the locations for the cold air return and supply run cut outs, however, it is the house leader’s responsibility to have volunteers finish the framing of the house by completing the necessary HVAC cut outs. If the cut out locations are not marked, consult with the Site Supervisor or Construction Manager to determine the proper locations.

5. Order/Tasks to be completed

By Whom?

____ 1. Cut out subfloor/framing where marked 1 Person

6. Tools/Equipment List

  • Safety Glasses
  • Work Gloves
  • Reciprocating Saw
  • Twelve-Gauge Drop Cords (50'-100' as needed for power at site)
  • Hand Saw
  • Hammer

7. Material List

  • 16D Nails

8. Quality Checkpoints

____ All marked subfloor/framing areas are cut out.
____ Ensure framing is secure when cutouts of framing have been done.
____ Ensure cutouts are not located in the middle of a floor joist.

9. Construction Drawings and Text

NOTE: The following drawings, diagrams, and text are to be used on the job site when a question arises as to methods and procedures associated with the task. The notes on the drawings have been geared toward use as a quick reference. If a more in-depth explanation is needed, please read the text description. But most importantly, consult your Habitat Site Supervisor and Construction Manager for advice as needed.

The only volunteer task for the HVAC installation is to properly cut out the cold air return and supply run locations. Using a reciprocating saw, carefully cut out the subfloor or framing lumber where marked. If you are unsure as to the proper location, verify with the house leader or consult the house plans. Clean the opening made with the reciprocating saw with a hand saw if necessary.

When cutting into the base plate framing material, make sure the base plate is secured to the subfloor on both sides of where the cutout is to occur. Use 16D nails to secure the baseplate to the subfloor if required.
