Chapter 30: Masonry

1. Introduction

On most Habitat projects the exterior masonry (brick) work is done entirely by a subcontractor. Typically, this work is limited to a portion or all of the front of the house, depending on the plans. He can start doing the masonry work after the rough framing is completed and the building is weather-tight (roofing, windows, doors) and inspected. This includes blue board and house wrap. The front porch should also have been poured. This requires the concrete subcontractor to have been in earlier. If the entire front wall is to be brick, then the front gable soffits should also be complete. The site supervisor will schedule the subcontractor, so it is a good idea to inform him when the house is ready for this phase.

2. Prior tasks to have been completed before “Masonry”

  • Rough framing completed and inspected.
  • Blue board and house wrap installed.
  • Front porch poured.
