Chapter 17: Plumbing
1. Introduction
On most Habitat projects the plumbing is done entirely by a subcontractor. He can start to do the “plumbing rough-in” after the rough framing is complete and inspected. After the walls are painted and the cabinets installed, then the plumbing subcontractor will return to finish plumbing installation. The site supervisor will schedule the subcontractors, so it is a good idea to inform him when the house is ready for this phase.
2. Prior tasks to have been completed before starting “plumbing rough-in”
- Rough framing completed and inspected – including drywall nailers and blocking.
- Leave space behind bathtub faucet area for plumbing piping.
- If instructed by HFHSL staff, install fiberglass insulation and vapor barrier in the exterior wall where the bathtub enclosure will go.
3. Prior tasks to have been completed before “plumbing finish”
- Cabinets and countertops installed at the kitchen sink and the bathroom sink.
- Mounting boards installed on basement walls where the utility sink and washer hook-ups will go. See site supervisor for instructions.
- Work areas clear of tools and debris so that the subcontractor can do the installation easily. This includes the basement.
