Chapter 20 : Security System
1. Introduction
On most Habitat projects the security system is done entirely by a subcontractor. He can start doing the rough-in layout after the rough framing is complete and inspected (before the insulation is installed) and the building is weather-tight (roofing, windows, and doors). Security wires are often not in electrical boxes, therefore volunteers often will be confused by what the wires are for and will cover them with drywall. It is important that a hole is put in the drywall for each wire and all wires are pulled through. After the interior and exterior are finished the contractor will return to install the sensors and control box, etc. The site supervisor will schedule the subcontractor, so it is a good idea to inform them when the house is ready for these phases.
2. Prior tasks to have been completed before “Security rough-in”
- Rough framing completed and inspected – including drywall nailers and blocking.
3. Prior tasks to have been completed before “Security finish”
- Walls totally painted, cabinets installed, interior basically finished
- Cut carefully around wiring at windows and doors when installing drywall. Be careful not to pinch the wiring up against the windows.
- Work area is clear of tools and debris so that the subcontractor can do installation easily. This includes the basement
