Going the Extra Mile

When it comes to actually erecting our Habitat houses, no one knows better the people who have made a difference in the building process than our construction manager Kyle Hunsberger. He speaks of how thankful he is for the vendors and contractors who have drastically reduced the cost of Habitat houses. Most of these companies have provided 10-15% discounts on services and goods, if not giving them to us outright. Americansteel, for instance, has donated the rebar and steel mesh critical to forming high-quality foundations and flatwork. Nuway Co. also has donated rebar, in addition to offering great discounts on rental equipment, repairs, and other material and services.

Berkley Lumber not only gives us free lumber, but also has donated a lumber bander and truck services for pick-up and transport of the wood. And when asked if they could find a pallet jack machine for Habitat to purchase, Berkley found one and then blessed us by buying it for us! Regarding concrete, Breckenridge Co. generously discounts theirs by $10-$15 a yard for us, while Rewards Co. saves us money on insulated concrete block by selling to us directly instead of through a distribution warehouse. We also are grateful to Ahal Contracting, who has donated time and given deep discounts on pump truck services. These trucks pump the concrete down to where it is needed in the foundation, and Ahal has saved us roughly $1,800 per home with their services. In addition, once a certain dollar amount of donated truck usage has been reached, they continue to give by charging us only for man-hours after that point.

Big thanks go to several companies who have provided great discounts on materials. MVP sells Habitat premium siding and exterior finish at cost, while Collins & Herman Fence Co. donates gates for the construction yards and slashes fencing material prices for us. We also want to show appreciation to D & E Electrical. Since the time they became involved with Habitat through our Blitz Build in 2001 they have afforded us electrical services at roughly $1,000 cheaper per house than other competitors.

Last but not least, thanks to the following contractors and vendors that also have helped us to continue building effectively and efficiently.

Habitat for Humanity families, volunteers and staff thank you!
