Recycling Volunteer Opportunity

Monday, July 26th, 2010

As part of our green initiatives, Habitat for Humanity has partnered with LEED for Homes.  This is a national, third party-verified certification system that promotes the design and construction of high performance green homes and encourages the adoption of sustainable practices. We are proud to say that our 2008 homes received their highest rating of LEED Platinum Certified.  Our 2009 homes are in the process of receiving their certification, and we expect them to be LEED Platinum Certified also. Our 2010 homes are being built to the same standards.

We are excited to announce that we have a new intern who will be heading up our current Site Recycling program.  He will be working improve our current practices by helping us reduce the amount of materials that are wasted throughout our build.   This program is very important as we continue to pursue green practices that will make our city and our world a better place to live.

We are looking for volunteers to assist our Site Recycling intern on all Saturday builds. Volunteers are needed from 8:30am until 3:30pm; you can work all day or a four-hour shift.  If you are interested in volunteering with our Site Recycling Program, please contact Josh Palacios at Joshua@habitatstl.org or 314-565-8865.

Saturday Construction Volunteers - Visit our Individual Construction Volunteer page for more information.  Make sure you read the Q&As for details, and sign up via our online system. Please note that some of this work may require heavy lifting and work at elevated heights.

Weekday Construction Volunteers - Weekday construction volunteers are needed on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. You can work whenever you are available, just email us for details, and bring a sack lunch! You must be at least 16 years or older. Please check out the Weekday Crew page on the website for more details and how to sign up.

NOTE:  ALL construction leadership, including volunteers completing field days for Forest Park, should register to volunteer with Jacinta Witherspoon and NOT via the online system.  Thanks and we hope to see you on the build site!

ReStore now sells recycled paint

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Brush on the “green”! Amazon Select recycled paint is now available in the ReStore – the only location in the St. Louis area. The recycled-content latex paint comes in 12 pre-mixed colors (including multiple neutrals, sage green, light blue and merlot). Download the PDF with swatches.

While most of us know about recycling, it might not come to mind beyond sorting your trash. But, it’s just as important to think about recycling when making purchases. Buying items made from recycled materials supports the recycling industry and can encourage more companies to make better use of our world’s resources. You’ve probably seen recycled paper, metal, and glass, but the Amazon Paint available at the ReStore reprocesses high-quality waste paints into this new product which contains over 90% recycled content. To learn more about the recycling process, visit their website http://amazonpaint.com.

Not only is this paint better for our environment, but at $16 per gallon and $55 per five gallon bucket, it can also save you some green!

Want to build your team?

This opportunity allows your team to give back to community while improving effectiveness and working together towards a common goal! While our Phase 2 weekends are filling up quickly, there is still time to join us for Phase 3.  Hope to see you on the build site soon!

Rain barrel workshop in the ReStore

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Did you miss our last rain barrel workshop? No worries, we’ve got another! Join us Wednesday, July 28th at 6:00 p.m. in the ReStore to learn how rain barrels can benefit you, the Saint Louis community, and our environment.

Come by the workshop and you can watch and learn for free, or leave with your very own rain barrel for just $50. We offer pre-made barrels or supply the parts, tools, and assistance for you to make your own. An RSVP is not required to attend the workshop but will help us make sure we’ll have enough supplies to go around. Please email restore@habitatstl.org with your name and the number of rain barrels you’re interested in.

Want more scoop about rain barrels? Read our blog post about our last rain barrel workshop with more details.

Build Site Heat Safety

Monday, July 12th, 2010

St. Louis summer is here in full swing! As a result, heat related illnesses could happen to volunteers on the build site. In order to educate you on the prevention, signs, and treatment of these various illnesses, please download our Heat Related Illness and Prevention Handout, which includes lots of valuable information that can help keep everyone safe during the summer months. Please take some time to review this information and pass it on to all the dedicated volunteers who are willing to brave the heat to make a difference.

Phase 2 Starts today!

Friday, July 9th, 2010

There are at least 29 St. Louisans who didn’t get much sleep last night… they are the men, women and children who will be moving into our Phase 2 homes! These 10 homes are on Sullivan and Dodier streets in Old North St. Louis. Our Phase 2 Blitz started bright and early this morning. This phase will consist of today and tomorrow’s 2-day blitz, followed by 8 more Saturdays between now and late-September. We expect all 10 homes to be completed before our Phase 2 dedication on September 28th. Hope to see you out on the build site soon!
