ReStore Manager, Josh Vaughn, on KSDK Channel 5!

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

As Spring rolls around, it is common to think about cleaning out your basement or garage.  Well we have a solution for your slightly used or new construction materials!  The ReStore Manager, Josh Vaughn, will be on KSDK Newschannel 5, Thursday, March 1st, during the noon broadcast to explain how the ReStore offers a low-cost alternative than traditional hardware stores, facilitates reuse and waste reduction by diverting construction materials from landfills, and provides financial support to Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis.  So, when you begin your spring cleaning take a second look before you throw something in the trash and think about donating items to the ReStore.  These items donated to the ReStore are tax deductible!   So, keep in mind that piece of “trash” could be someone else’s treasure.

Support TEAM HABITAT at the GO! St. Louis Marathon

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

By volunteering, you will not only be supporting the marathon, but this is the first year that HFHSL is sponsoring our very own “TEAM HABITAT” to help bring awareness and funds for our mission of eliminating sub standard housing in St. Louis city and county! This opportunity is another way that you, too, can be part of that mission.  This event takes place on April 15, 2012 and we need 5 volunteers to serve as Course Monitors.  Each shift is 4-5 hours from about 6:00am til noon.

All volunteers please note these details:

  • Must be 18 or over.
  • You’ll be standing in intersections (not busy ones, think more side streets) and motioning to runners the correct direction, as well as helping to make sure traffic obeys the “closed down” street signs.
  • Standing is required for the whole time.
  • Each volunteer will be given a really bright and official GO! St. Louis t-shirt to wear.

If interested, please send your name, address, email, phone number, t-shirt size to beckie@habitatstl.org by Feb. 27.

We schedule on a first respond, first scheduled basis.

GO! St. Louis Read, Right, & Run Participants Learn the Importance of Fitness!

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

The GO! St. Louis Read, Right, & Run Marathon® participants are keeping up the pace.  Last Saturday, February 4th, the participants gathered together with Anika Porter at Fitness with Anika for over 2 hours!  Anika began her program in 2007 and has continued to assist individuals in weight loss, personal training, corporate training, and group fitness classes.  With the weather being a bit gloomy the GO! St. Louis Read, Right, & Run Marathon® participants enjoyed the indoor activities.  These activities included stretching, running laps, lifting weights, punching bags, and basic fitness exercises!

Not only did she show the children physical fitness techniques, she also explained on why it is important to stay active throughout your life.   The children were also informed on how Anika became involved with fitness, how she created a career out of something she loved, and other careers that link to physical fitness.  These amazing children from the JeffVanderLou area completed another task off of the Run list and cannot wait for the last big race on April 14th!  Mark this date on your calendar because this is when the children will run their last 1.2 miles in Forest Park and celebrate their success!

There are more events within the GO! St. Louis Read, Right, & Run Marathon® program that are coming up so check back on our blog for more updates.  To learn more about the GO! St. Louis Read, Right & Run Marathon® Program and some of the ways our JVL children assisted the community by  visiting our past posts.

President, Volunteer, Mentor: Jimmy Carter

Friday, February 10th, 2012

With President’s Day around the corner, here at Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis we cannot forget our most famous volunteer, Former President Jimmy Carter.  Jimmy  and Rosalynn Carter are deeply committed to social justice and basic human rights.  Together in 1984, they volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and became regular volunteers and advocates for eliminating substandard housing.  Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were effected by this volunteering experience and created the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project for Habitat for Humanity International.  Every year since 1984, The Carter’s would donate a week of their time to build homes in different cities and different countries around the world.  The Carter Work Project has provided housing solutions for families in 13 countries around the world, 18 states in the U.S. and the District of Columbia.

As you sit down and look at your schedule, see how you can contribute some of your time to the cause of eliminating substandard housing.  By volunteering a day on the Build Site, a few hours in the ReStore, or by volunteering without the use of a hammer you are helping families afford a home of their own and helping children live in healthy and stable environment.  So, please don’t hesitate.  See what day you can volunteer and sign up online.
