Amazon Paint Now Available at the ReStore

April 16th, 2012

Do you ever wonder what happens to leftover latex paint? Typically, it goes into landfills or down the drain and is harmful to the environment.

But there’s good news. Latex paint can be recycled!

Amazon Environmental, Inc “uses leftover latex paint to manufacture recycled content paint” (http://www.amazonpaint.com/about_us.html). By using Amazon’s LEED-credited recycled paint, you are helping to protect the environment while still getting the same quality of paint as the non-recycled variety. (For more information on how its made and why you should use it, please visit the Amazon Paint website at www.amazonpaint.com.)

The Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis ReStore now carries Amazon Paint! Available in 1- and 5-gallon sizes, the paint comes in the following colors: whipped white, whipped white eggshell, ivory white, ivory white eggshell, desert beige, tawny beige, island sand, safari tan, ice blue, vintage buff, merlot red, garden sage, forest green, stony gray, autumn mist, and chocolate brown, and is also available as a primer (not all colors come in both 1- and 5-gallon sizes). Stop in today to grab your favorite shade!

ReStore on Great Day St. Louis

April 13th, 2012

On yesterday’s Great Day St. Louis, Josh Vaughn (ReStore Manager) describes many different facets of the ReStore, from what can be found find in stock to donation pick up. Visit http://www.habitatstl.org/supportus/restore/ for more information on the Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis ReStore.

Gateway High Architects Take Over the ReStore

April 10th, 2012

Kahari and Kurry are two seniors at Gateway High. In order for them to graduate this spring, each has to have a major – theirs are both architecture – and an internship. Kahari’s and Kurry’s internships are taking place in the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Every Monday and Wednesday from 10:00am-2:30pm, they can be found at the ReStore, assembling a kitchen display. Complete with walls, cupboards, appliances, and flooring, Kahari and Kurry are using only materials found in the ReStore to outfit his kitchen.

Their instructor is Elgin Carnes, a Civil Engineering and Architecture teacher at Gateway. Mr. Carnes says the internship gives students a chance to have hands-on experience and commends his students for being self-motivated and doing (almost) all of the labor themselves (high school students are not allowed to use power tools). Recently finished with the project, Kahari and Kurry stayed well under their budget of $3,000. Now that the display kitchen is finished, Kahari and Kurry will return to school to finish up their high school careers.

Next time you’re in the ReStore, be sure to check out the design, which can be wholly (or partly) purchased by any interested buyer.

Kahari's and Kurry's kitchen installation costs a mere $2,000

Another Read and Right Before the Final Run

April 5th, 2012

Since last October, 11 of our homebuyer’s kids from the JeffVanderLou neighborhood have been participating in Read, Right, Run, a program that develops reading-proficient, community-minded, and physically fit children by challenging them to read 26 books, right the community with 26 good deeds, and run 26.2 miles over a six-month period.

The Read, Right, Run crew visited The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center on March 3rd as one of their Rights. The woman in charge, Ms. Tiny, took the time to get to know all the kids’ names and talked to them about nutrition and how to eat a balanced meal. The crew put food on plates, learned how to use the industrial dishwasher, and helped with diabetic meals. After the children were all finished serving lunch, Ms. Tiny wouldn’t let them leave empty-handed and had everyone take home to-go plates filled with yummy treats.

The crew also completed another Read on March 16th when they visited author/illustrator Kadir Nelson at the public library. Before the event, students from the Washington University in St. Louis Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter came to read with and get to know our Read, Right, Run kids. Our cohort filled roughly 20 of the 80 seats set out for Kadir Nelson, who fielded questions from our 11 runners as well as their brothers, sisters, and parents.

More than 5,000 runners – all children – will make the final 1.2 mile run in Forest Park on the morning of April 14th. Stay tuned for our final report on our Read, Right, Run kids!

Thank you, Max!

March 29th, 2012

Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis recently had the honor of partnering with Max, a local St. Louisan, on his Bar Mitzvah project. While he’s 13 years old and doesn’t quite meet the build site volunteer age requirement, Max did get to visit the Old North site during our blitz build, stopped into the ReStore, and interviewed Kimberly McKinney, Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis CEO. Because he feels lucky to be able to have his own backyard, Max donated sod to HFHSL so that future Habitat families can have their own backyards. Habitat’s model of building houses through community effort (including donations, volunteers, and homebuyer “sweat equity”) reminds Max of his “Torah portion, T’rumah (gifts) where all of the people come together and contribute something, with a willing heart, to build the very first sanctuary, which is meant to be a sacred space for worship and a gathering place for the community.” A big THANK YOU to Max for his support of Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis!
