rect_on.gif: On Who Are The Habitat Volunteers?

Nailing Crew:

Our 2008 Build - twenty seven homes in JVL!

"Habitat simply could not exist without its volunteers!" They are the backbone, heart and soul, hands and feet of Habitat whether they wield a hammer, microphone, donated building supplies, or a keyboard! You can help eliminate substandard housing in the St. Louis Area. You can do so as an individual, as part of a group, or as a volunteer for a Sponsor! We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities using many skills; we can find a place for YOU!

Our construction volunteers can be skilled (often helping out as crew or task leaders), semi-skilled, or just willing to learn! Our leaders will direct the work and coach you on safety, but you will not be expected to do something you are not ready to do.

New Individual Volunteers must attend Orientation to sign up for dates to work. The number of volunteers needed fluctuates weekly so we ask that volunteers only come when they are assigned to work. This will help us limit overages which result in inefficiencies and/or lunch shortages.Individual Volunteers only need to attend Orientation ONCE.

Individual Volunteer -- attends mandatory Orientation; is over 16 years old; and is not affiliated with a sponsor or group. Opportunities are available for skilled and unskilled construction, non-construction, and committees! Habitat recruits volunteers with various talents who can make a regular commitment to our organization and its mission. A current year waiver must be on file in order to work on the construction site or in the ReStore. Please understand that your commitment to Habitat may vary according to your time constraints, your individual talents, and Habitat's needs.

Group Volunteers - Scheduled groups 10 to 15 persons, skilled and unskilled, augment the sponsor volunteers on build days; help with side tasks on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays outside of our regular build schedule. Read more about Group Volunteers if your organization wants to send a group. All work is assigned "as needed" on the scheduled dates as all tasks are equally important. Occasionally, larger groups help with landscaping or site preparation with Construction Staff approval. Some groups use volunteering for team or leadership building, but all are encouraged to understand they volunteer to help Habitat's mission; group leaders and or representative are invited to attend the Orientation and share what they have learned. (This is NOT mandatory and certainly the group does NOT have to attend Orientation. We attempt to schedule all volunteer groups based on our current need. Your request for a build day does not guarantee you that opportunity. Groups when possible will be granted one build day, but due to the large number of requesting groups and individuals we are not typically able to give groups multiple build days. If you are interested in multiple build days each year, please let us know and we can talk with you about our sponsorship opportunities.

After your group is scheduled, you are considered an "Active Volunteer" and are encouraged to go to the "Active Volunteer" page for any updates on parking, maps, schedule changes, etc. For information regarding water and lunch, please ready your confirmation letter!

Sponsor Volunteers - Anyone scheduled by the organization that provides the funding or services to build their house.

Construction Leaders -- We always need Construction Leaders. Some of the most important volunteers in the Habitat process, both for construction expertise, and on-site leadership and training, are the skilled and proud Construction Professionals. They lead the way in helping many volunteers learn the "do's and don'ts" of homebuilding. Find more information under "Construction." Construction Leader Training classes will be scheduled soon.

Please contact jacinta@habitatstl.org as soon as possible for more information.

Community Service -

High School Students must attend an Orientation. Before you attend Orientation or work, please find out from your school if you need a validation letter from Habitat at the end of your work hours. Construction site opportunities are based on availability and our needs from week to week. Students are responsible for obtaining a time card during check-in and documenting their service hours. NO validation letters will be written without a vaild time card. Therefore we recommend that you start early, as we do not guarantee build site volunteer opportunities!

Apprentice Carpenters, contact jacinta@habitatstl.org directly. There are up to 600 volunteers on site and you will need to be responsible for paperwork being properly documented.

There are many ways for you to help. Volunteers are needed both on and off the construction site. Learn which opportunity is right for you:
