| Upcoming Build Site Opportunities...We are in need of construction volunteers to help us ensure we meet our required numbers on several Saturdays and during the Phase 2 Blitz. We are trying to recruit volunteers for the following days: Saturdays: July 19; July 26; Aug 2; Aug 9; Aug 16 Weekdays: Mon, July 7 Phase 2 Blitz: Wed, July 9; Thurs, July 10; Sat, July 12 This is an OPEN PLEA, which means you do not have to attend orientation prior to volunteering! Please click the date below for which you would like to volunteer. Spots are filled on a “first respond, first schedule basis”. We must keep count of the number of open volunteer slots, as we will supply water and lunch for you. We will send you a RSVP email with a waiver, directions, and volunteer brochure to confirm your attendance. Once we reach our required volunteer numbers we will send you an email letting you know all slots are full! Please do not come to work if you do not receive a confirmation. Our build schedule calls for a specific number of volunteers to complete each task. If we go over those numbers then we end up with people standing around disengaged with the project. We do not want Habitat volunteers to feel they have wasted their time. You must be 16 years or older. If you are under 18 years old there should be 1 adult for every 4-5 youth. Small groups of 3-5 volunteers are welcome, as well as larger groups of 10-15. Waiver: We must have a 2008 waiver on file. When we send your RSVP we will attach a waiver for you to print out and bring to the site. Please remember the waiver is 2-sided and we need both pages. Anyone under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian—no exceptions! Please DO NOT fax your waivers to our office. Time: You should arrive no later than 7:45AM; the day will go until about 4PM or 4:30PM for construction volunteers. HFHSL 2008 Build InformationWe will build 27 homes during the 2008 build season. Our build will take place in a familiar stomping ground for many of us, the JeffVanderLou (JVL) neighborhood. If you recall, we built 20 homes in 2004 and another 20 in 2006 in JVL. Those homes were built on Bacon, Coleman, Garrison, & St. Louis Ave. This year's build will be near the intersection of Grand Ave. and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr., roughly six blocks south of our 2004 and 2006 build locations. Interesting Info on the 2008 Build- Home style will be a combination of one-story, two-story, and one-and-a-half story homes
- The one-story homes will be slab on grade, which is new for HFHSL this year
- Exteriors will be a Nova Brick front and Pre-Finished Cement Fiber Siding
- Exterior wall dimensions are 2' x 6' on 24" OC (on center)
- Exterior wall sheathing will be 5/8" OSB (oriented strand board)
- Foundations are a Pre-Cast Insulated Foundation System
- Utilities will be underground
- Roofs will be Foiled-Backed Roof Sheathing
- ..and we will provide dishwashers to the 2008 homebuyers!
The build will take on a similar format to the 2007 build. We will build in three mini-blitzes: - June 4 - June 7
- July 9 - July 12
- Aug 20 - Aug 23
Each mini-blitz will consist of 4 consecutive days of building, with an additional 12 Saturdays on the back-end to complete the finishing work.
We have lots of opportunities for financial sponsorship available. Our sponsorships range from $5,000 Brick Level to a $100,000 Neighborhood Level. If you are interested in learning more about sponsorship opportunities, please contact our Director of Resources, Courtney Simms, at courtney@habitatstl.org or call 314-371-0400. As we solidify our financial sponsors, we are in need of groups and individuals to help us insure success on our build site. We have group opportunities on weekdays and Saturdays. If you are interested in learning more about group opportunities, please click here to visit the group page of our website. Individual volunteers, we have not forgotten you!We will periodically send mass emails to solicit individual volunteers to work on the build site. When possible we will try to send emails at least a week or two in advance. We are also in the process of researching web based software which will allow individuals to schedule themselves online. Please do not forget about all of our other volunteer opportunities. We are in need of volunteers to help on committees, in our ReStore, or for a host of other non-construction activities. Please click here to visit our Volunteer Want Ads. Thanks for your patience during this transition. We are in desperate need of volunteer construction leadership for our build. Our volunteer construction leadership includes our house leaders, crew leaders, task leaders and site safety observers. If you are interested in learning more or volunteering in this capacity, please email our Volunteer Coordinator, Jacinta Witherspoon at jacinta@habitatstl.org or call 314-371-0400 ext 27. Summer training classes will be starting soon!
Keep your eyes open for more build day information and opportunities! To work or not to work that is the question!
Construction Weather Hot Line is 314-371-0400 X45. Listen for the current date as we only update if work is cancelled. Very rarely do we cancel work. Also listen for your Phase as some houses under roof may work while other houses may not. Realize that often it may not be raining at the build site while torrents rain at your home. We will not build if there is lightning or the weather creates unsafe site conditions. Otherwise wear rain gear and bring plastic bags or towels to protect the interior of your car for your return home. Revised: 30-June-2008
