The Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis ReStore recycles new, used, overstocked, discontinued, and salvageable building materials, and appliances donated by contractors, retailers, and individuals. The donated items are re-sold to the general public to help support Habitat in their efforts to build decent affordable housing.
Frequently Asked Questions about ReStore Volunteering
How old do ReStore volunteers have to be?
All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. All volunteers will be required to fill out a waiver of liability for each calendar year they volunteer.
What is the time commitment to volunteer in the ReStore?
You can volunteer in the ReStore Mondays through Saturdays. Volunteers can choose from one of the following shifts: 8-12pm, 9-1pm, 10-3pm, or 1-5pm, or a full day.
We ask for a minimum 4 hour time commitment.
What kind of jobs will I do when I volunteer in the ReStore?
Below is a list of all the volunteer roles within the ReStore. Roles will be assigned upon arrival on your schedule volunteer day, based on need or daily projects. We expect all volunteers to practices the highest standards of safety, donor, customer, and employee relations.
Customer Service Volunteer
- Responsible for assisting ReStore customers
- Greets all customers and assists them as needed
- Completes sold tickets/receipts
- Keeps front store area clean and tidy
- Organizes and displays donations
- Practices good use of store policies and volunteer guidelines
- Answers basic questions about Habitat & ReStore
- Helps ensure an efficient daily flow within the ReStore
Deconstruction Volunteer
- Assists in deconstruction process to obtain items of resale value to the ReStore
- Is aware of security, safety, and housekeeping when working in warehouse or at deconstruction site
- Is able to transport varying amounts of building materials safely
- Is knowledgeable about procedures in home deconstruction and can preserve the quality and condition of donated deconstruction items
- Responsible for collection of materials donated to the ReStore, that are unusable, for scrapping or recycling
Monday Crew Volunteer
- To be an active member of Monday Crew, volunteers need to work at least two Mondays per month, between 10am-4pm
- Responsible for the cleaning, polishing, and minor repairs of donations
- Follows ReStore Pricing Guidelines when marking new items
- Places items safely within their respective departments
- Merchandises donations to make more room, ensures best display of product
- Removes broken/damaged/unsellable materials from the sales area and recycles/disposes of these items
- Is continuously vigilant for security, safety, and housekeeping
Special Events Volunteer
- Attends ReStore events inside and outside the store (such as Green Expos and Fairs)
- Greets event attendees with enthusiasm
- Is knowledgeable about the ReStore and can communicate pertinent information about Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis to potential donors and customers
- Able to adjust between high and slow paced work easily
- Able to provide ReStore staff with feedback on event and ideas for best practices
- Event times and locations vary, so flexibility is important
Warehouse/Merchandising Volunteer
- Assists staff in moving new items to the sales floor
- Places items safely within their respective departments
- Merchandises donations to make more room, ensure best display of product
- Remove broken/damaged/unsellable materials from the sales floor and recycles/disposes of these items
- Continuously monitors safety and security of the warehouse receiving area
- Works with ReStore Staff to unload vehicles and keep materials organized in dock area
- Ensures donations are clean and in working order prior to sale
- Responsible for the cleaning, polishing, and minor repairs of donations
Repurposed Garden Volunteer
- No experience is necessary to assist with the construction of rain barrels, compost tumblers, and cold frames.
- Great opportunity to learn about sustainable gardening and woodworking.
- Volunteer on the first Saturday of each month from 9am-12:30pm and/or 1:30pm-5pm.

What do I wear when I volunteer at the ReStore?
Casual clothing that you don't mind getting dirty! Absolutely NO sandals, open-toed shoes, open-heel/backless shoes, or flip-flops. Please do not wear low cut shirts, very short shorts or baggy pants that leave your underwear exposed.
