Why Sustainability?

Sustainability means meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the needs of future generations. In addition to providing quality, affordable housing to local families, Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis strives to be a leader in sustainable practices and design.

"Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis is committed to working towards a sustainable future. From adopting Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) standards for new home construction, to participating in the St. Louis Green Business Challenge, to diverting local construction and demolition materials through the ReStore, our organization continually strives to reduce the environmental impact of our homes, neighborhoods, and workplaces." - Kimberly McKinney, Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis CEO

A Leader in Sustainable Practices

Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis families build and buy homes that are attractive, affordable, and sustainable. Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis is very proud of its efforts and best practices using a holistic approach to building an energy efficient and sustainable home for the homebuyer, the community, and the environment.

Habitat for Humanity International, in partnership with the Home Depot Foundation Sustainable Building Program, provided training, resources, and financial support towards our 2008 LEED Platinum Certification. The 2008 Case Study provides a synopsis of the project.

Since 2008, all new Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis homes have been built to LEED Platinum Standards. The one exception was our 2010 rebuild project in Florissant, which received a LEED Gold Certification.

The video below highlights some of the green features of our homes.

Our Green Partners

The USGBC (US Green Building Council) certifies our homes - via third party verifiers - using the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) criteria for an energy and water efficient and environmentally friendly.

To earn the ENERGY STAR and Indoor airPLUS designations, our homes must meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. EPA, have additional features designed to help protect against indoor air pollutants, and is also third party verified.
