“My parents are actually a huge reason why I got into volunteering with Habitat Saint Louis in the last year.
Three years ago, my dad was very ill in a hospital in Phoenix. I was splitting my time between there and their home in Prescott, installing interior and exterior railings in hopes my dad would come home and be able to walk again with assistance from railings. He had a cancerous tumor on his spine that caused a cord compression, leaving him unable to walk, down 40 lbs – he very nearly died.
While in Prescott, I visited the local ReStore that my parents very frequently visited. Everyone there knew them, and they were honestly worried about them. They gifted me a chair lift that I could install for my dad’s use. As I loaded it into my dad’s truck that I was driving, one of the employees told me: “We’re happy for you to have this… we love your parents and want to help them.” The experience moved me so much that I felt I needed to get involved here in Saint Louis.
Thankfully, my dad is now doing well; he’s up and moving! The cancer is not gone by any stretch, but he and my mom (married nearly 65 years now) are living life everyday…and volunteering at the Prescott ReStore.”
Rob has been a volunteer with Habitat Saint Louis for over a year. He joins our Weekday Crew once a week, favoring carpentry and trim work. As a set designer for theater, Rob particularly enjoys reviewing a home’s drawing package. When he’s not on the build sites, Rob enjoys kayaking and stained-glass art.
